Background of the Study
Lead poisoning is a major public health concern that disproportionately affects children, particularly in areas with widespread mining activities. Zamfara State, located in the northwest of Nigeria, has faced a significant lead poisoning crisis due to artisanal gold mining, which involves the use of toxic materials, including lead-based compounds (Nuhu et al., 2024). In 2010, a large-scale outbreak of lead poisoning occurred in the state, leading to the death of hundreds of children and leaving many others with severe developmental impairments (Musa & Mohammed, 2023).

Lead exposure in children is particularly harmful as it can cause irreversible damage to the nervous system, leading to cognitive delays, developmental disabilities, and behavioral problems (Yahaya et al., 2023). The effects of lead poisoning on child development are particularly concerning in rural areas like Zamfara, where children are often exposed to contaminated soil and water sources near mining sites (Aliyu et al., 2023). This study will investigate the extent of lead poisoning in Zamfara State and its effects on child development, with a focus on cognitive, behavioral, and physical outcomes in children aged 1-10 years.

Statement of the Problem
Lead poisoning in Zamfara State, largely associated with artisanal mining, poses a significant threat to the health and development of children. Despite awareness of the issue, lead exposure continues to be prevalent in many mining communities. This study aims to assess the effects of lead poisoning on child development, focusing on the long-term consequences for cognitive and physical health.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of lead poisoning among children in Zamfara State.
  2. To evaluate the effects of lead poisoning on cognitive and physical development in children.
  3. To provide recommendations for mitigating lead exposure and improving child health in mining communities.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of lead poisoning among children in Zamfara State?
  2. How does lead poisoning affect cognitive and physical development in children?
  3. What interventions can reduce lead exposure and its effects on children in Zamfara State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant prevalence of lead poisoning among children in Zamfara State.
  2. Lead poisoning has a detrimental effect on the cognitive and physical development of children in Zamfara State.
  3. Implementing interventions to reduce lead exposure will improve the health and development outcomes for children in Zamfara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on children living in mining communities in Zamfara State, with emphasis on cognitive and physical health outcomes related to lead poisoning. Limitations include the challenge of accessing remote communities and potential biases in self-reported health data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Lead Poisoning: The accumulation of toxic levels of lead in the body, often due to environmental exposure, which affects various body systems, especially the nervous system.
  • Child Development: The progression of cognitive, physical, emotional, and social skills in children.
  • Artisanal Mining: Small-scale, often unregulated mining operations, frequently associated with environmental hazards such as lead contamination.
